It sounds like some of the detent pieces are missing in your shift
mechanism. There is supposed to be a series of balls and springs in place
that prevent two of the shift rods from moving if one is moved from the
neutral position. Alternately maybe one of the shift forks is floating on
its rod and allowing one of the forward gears to remain engaged when you
shift into reverse. In any case you are looking at removing the side cover
from the trans.
