Actually, some rally cars had four speeds with no OD because it saved
weight and kept things simple.  For the Rally Cars that had OD, the 
throttle switch was completely bypassed, as was the OD switch on the
dashboard.  All they had was a simple switch on the gear lever that
turned the OD on and off when needed.
