My jack is slightly to high to get under most of the frame even when at its 
lowest, I grab a sturdy part of the car and push up and slide the jack 
under, no lumber required.  As the suspension is suspending the car (doing 
its job) you don't need to be hercules, the hulk, superman, or even batman 
be able to lift the car an inch or so.
