I have used both chemical strippers as mentioned but also like the 3M
abrasive wheels that go on the end of your drill for small areas or stubborn
parts. You can get them at most any hardware story and many auto parts or
body shops.
Looks like a charcoal colored sponge in the shape of a wheel, maybe 3.5" in
diameter, with a shaft to go in the drill, $6 or so, good on rust as well.
Doesn't eat into the metal other than roughing up the surface a little.
Both the chemical stripper and the abrasive wheel make a mess, but different
kind of mess, the abrasive dust, the stripper the nasty paste of
stripper/paint/bondo that comes off the car, pick your poison.
Would be careful about too much heat on aluminum.
