You sure to get lots of opinions and advice on this one ... !
Here is my take:
The concern with cold running, particularly if the engine has cooled =
overnight is the oil temperature; no matter what engine oil you use its =
lubrication properties are degraded when running below operating temps; =
think trying to circulate treacle. In the 60=E2=80=99s there was always =
the concern of breaking rings if the engine was revved too soon when =
cold; I don=E2=80=99t think that our AH have this problem.
The water temp is not the perfect indicator of oil temp but it is all we =
have; water temp can be very different to oil temp particularly when =
starting from cold.=20
So in my opinion it is best is to =E2=80=9Cgently=E2=80=9D start driving =
as soon as it is running stably and not likely to stall on you. Gentle =
means no revving through the gears and particularly no labouring in the =
wrong gear (sleeve bearings); the engine will warm up quicker when =
driving rather than sitting idling as the losses are higher when it is =
doing some work.
Also, I have always tried to shut off the choke as soon as possible, as =
running with too rich a mixture has the possibility of diluting the =
cylinder wall lubrication when you most need it.

Subject: [Healeys] start up Temp

So it has been many years since I have had a working choke in my car.=20
I know I need to have oil pressure before I head out on a cold morning, =
but what temp should I wait for before driving off? I have just held the =
jokes up by hand until the car reached 190 degrees and ran without the =
choke.=20
It has been in the 30s in the morning, but is is warming up. Today was =
42. So at what temp is OK to start driving the car? It has been over 7 =
years since I have had the car on the road and I drove it sparingly =
then. I now try to drive it as much as possible.
