If the TD gets hairy and shakes, you need to check out the
suspension and/or tires.  I too, can drive the TD at 70+ with no
complaints other than the buzziness of the engine.  I do have
problems at first when going from my non power steering pickup to
the TD.  I have to learn to let it wander around the lane some as
the steering is much lighter and faster.  I did find that back in
the early 70's when it still had bias ply tires that cracks and
ruts in the road caused the TD to meander more.  This was
especially noticeable on the Pennsylvania turnpike about 1972. 
By the way that was the worse piece of road I've ever driven on
and I had to pay for the privilege!
