found it easy to remove the rivet by cutting a narrow groove across its head

it.  You'll then be able to reinstall it with a hammer.

    If that is the case, they are similar to what we put on Triumph
motorcycle patent plates on the aluminum side cover with. (English teachers
stay away from that sentence!!) We call them hammer rivets, and with a plier
of choice, simply turn counter-clockwise to take it out. It will leave marks
on the edges, but then, the Triumph ones are obtainium (stainless steel I
think). To install, light taps with a brass or aluminum hammer will do the
trick.
