Neil-

My 4.2 has the biggest cam Woody Cooper has for a street car, Edelbrock 500
on a factory intake & I have close to 200,000 trouble free miles on the
motor. What I found, by accident, was that the SU was not providing enough
flow over 85 mph under full acceleration, i.e., drag racing. Other than
that, it is fine. It still ran the quarter in a GT loaded with luggage & the
A/C on at 93 mph. Switching to my auxiliary fuel pump, a
Puralator(similar/same as the Facet) netted me a 94 mph run. The auxiliary
pump is the low pressure version, not the 5-7 lb model.

My info from one of the installation sheets said 5 lbs of fuel pressure was
recommended, but 5 or 6, most of the time you drive, the car is on the idle
circuit. If most of your driving is of the "spirited" variety, then 5 or 6
lbs is certainly a requirement.

I have not been able to find a good electric fuel pump producing 5-6 lbs of
pressure, that did not click click me to distraction. I would probably
change from the SU if I could find one.

Jim

Jim,

>What about the original SU pump? I don't know what engine/carb set up you

I have a cammed factory 3.5 with JWR manifold, Edelbrock 500. Is the stock
SU really adequate for a 500? The reason I ask is I thought Edelbrock
recommend 6psi (not talking about flow here) for this carburettor. It says
so on their website. I could go back to an original SU, but am a little
sceptical. SU psi ratings are for SU carbs. A pair of HS4's/HIF6 etc require
a lot less pressure, I thought it was in the 1.5psi-3psi range no? Can
someone give me a technical reason why I shouldn't worry? (too late here for
me to calc figures <G>) If so I'll happily go back to an SU. Never had this
sort of (frightening) problem before with SU pumps!

Cheers,
Neil
