Some places (like MGOC in UK) sell an alloy adapter an (electric) sensor can
screw into, that fits between the two (cut) halves of the top hose. These
switch on and off at a fixed temp. You could braze a suitable boss onto the
radiator header tank for a switch like this, but obviously if you had to
replace the radiator you would have to do it again. Some after-market fans
come complete with a capillary bulb that is inserted in the top hose,
plumbed back to an adjustable switch. With these you can vary the
temperature the fan cuts in which might be useful (although people with
these seem to prefer them to come on at a much lower temperature than
factory switches as they are paranoid about seeing the temp gauge rise), but
I have also seen these cause a leak at the top hose during warm-up, and it
does create a thin area in the hose. Others can be wedged in the fins of
the radiator, but that is a bit hit and miss and vibration could wear
through the tubes.
