your dash light may be flickering at 850rpm because your regulator isn't
adjusted quite right internally, or because (more likely) your tach is
optimistic...
If you increase idle a bit and the light goes out, and your
battery/electrical system seems otherwise OK, then check your tach against a
 test-tach, either a decent home unit or on the one at a shop. Chances are
you'll find its running high.
If not, the better shop manuals give the painful instructions about how to
adjust your regulator (pre alternator cars) or you can do the "diagnose by
replacement" routine if you still aren't getting anywhere.
