I was paging through one of those Brooklands collections on the MGB last
night and looking at speeds at selected RPMs (what with the purchase of my
shinny new OD tranny!) and noted the following:
--OD ratio in early cars was 0.80 and in later cars was 0.82 (?) Now these
magazines usually get their numbers from the mfg. and sometimes they are not
terribly accurate. Can anyone verify that the OD ratio (in 4th) did change
from the early box to the later one? Or did different OD ratios come with
different rear end ratios? Can anyone out there clarify this?
--Getting to your question, Chris, the magazine articles all reported top
speed to be in the sub 110 range, right around 104 or so in fact, with a
non-OD tranny. I would suspect therefore that that was at or perhaps
slightly above redline in 4th. Bearing in mind the list's recent discussion
on engines at redline and your long break in period, I'm inclinded to say
"put it out of your mind." What else are you going to do anyway at this
point? As long as there are no signs of damage at the speeds/rpms you
travel, just take care and keep an eye on things.
