I have always used mineral oil. It is very light weight, maybe equivalent to
10 weight and can be found in many stores. I have used it for my SU carbs as
well as shocks. I have to admit that it may be hard to find this oil in the
unscented variety - it is commonly used as "bath oil" or "baby oil" in its
oderous form.

Here in Montana, I would not even think of trying to use a motor oil,
particularly 20W or higher. When temperatures drop far below the freezing
point, the oil does not flow. As an MG owner for two decades (and three cars
later), I have had many cold weather MG adventures....
