May I suggest that you look into completely replacing what you have
now in your car. I recently put a new cd-player in both my MGB and
MGB-GT and hpe to do so soon with my MG MAgnette. Your old hole is
the best place for your radio. Modern stereos have theft deterent
features built in, like detachable face plates. Also they have
shrouds, and bolts, and all sorts of things that make it terribly
difficult to remove. Your second trouble is going to be speakers.
Does your car have a removable top or a fold down one? Either way,
you should get one of those pre-made all in one speaker boxes with
the speakers in it already and put that behind your seats. Figure
out a good way to make it difficult to remove. In the GT all I did
was take off the handle! To getit out, you have to lean both front
seats foward, push the speakers ontot the back of the seats, lower
the ledge behind the back seat, and then pull it out. It's far more
than any crook would want to do when so much other stuff is easier to
steal.
In the B, I bought the pre-made boxes without speakers, of a much
smaller size. I carpetted them to match the car. I then cut a peice
of heavy plywood to fit right behind the seats in that area over the
batteries. With the old carpeting inbetween the speaker boxes and the
plywood, I screwed into the new boxes from underneath. If someone
were to try to pick a box up and walk away, they'd find it to be
heavy, awkward, and seriously screwed down.
I guess you have one of those almost-octaganol speaker spaces up
front. Take out what ever is in there, and fit two speakers, facing
like this:

                                      <speaker      speaker>

into the footwells on either side. Yes, cut holes in the side of
this speaker holder, and direct the sound into the footwells. You
can fit two bigger speakers behind the grille that way. The grille
becomes sort of a "dummy" now.
You can put your detachable face plate in the glovebox and your
CD's in the trunk. Don't let the guys at the Stereo Store convince
you that you need an amp, or one of the mounting kits or any of that
shit. All you need are speakers and a new unit. Amps are for people
who like to have the car bounce at stop lights and drown out everyone
elses stereo. The deck alone is quite adaquate, infact often more
than you need. If you can't hear your stereo, may I suggest a new
exhaust.

                      John
