Ross almost has it right. UNF is also called SAE or American Fine. UNC is
American Course and almost the same as Whitworth except that the thread angle
on Whitworth is 55 degrees and the thread angle on American is 60 degrees.
This means little on hardware that is old and rusty....except that there is
almost no Whitworth hardware on British cars. TD's had a mix of UNF and BSF
and I believe when the MGA came along, the change over to UNF was almost
complete. On T Type MG's and probably all through the B , the only Whitworth
thread on the entire car is the bolt that is used to adjust the fan belt on
the Generator. The clever British however made the Bolt heads on BSF and
Whitworth and Mad Metric so that the same wrenchs can be used. You might
notice that on some wrenchs both the BSF and Whitworth size is given. Ross
is right in that S.U. never retooled and continues to use BA or British
Association standards. I can't remember if Lucas switched but I don't think
they did either (come on Chip, I'm getting beyond my knowledge
here).......Just to make things interesting, there is also a thread standard
that is used on Britsh motobikes....British Cycle! There is one British
Cycle thread on a T type MG, a big huzzah to the first one that know where
it is......

Cheers
Terry
