I didn't catch the overdrive thread either but I wouldn't worry about
switching into overdrive with clutch, w/o clutch, under power, whatever
-- just do it!

There is a small benefit to backing off the throttle a little until the
overdrive clutch catches hold but the wear isn't a big deal. Most
overdives will last much longer than the transmission and quite a bit
longer than the clutch given a good supply of clean oil.

It's a planetary gear set with a clutch suface around a large outer hub.
It would be very unusual to wear out this clutch material and it is
replaceable. It is more likely that the springs will get tired or the
solenoid actuator will give up before you loose the friction material.
