Hi John,

  Sounds to me as if your fuel pump quits running after you start the
engine, so it dies as soon as it burns up the fuel in the float bowl(s).
This would explain why it restarts after you let the fuel pump run.  I
suspect you reconnected a couple of wires wrong after you reinstalled
the engine.  It should be easy to check.  Let the pump run until the
carbs fill up, then disconnect the fuel line from the carbs and connect
it to a jar. Then start the engine and see if it's still pumping fuel.
