    My wifes' 1977 MG-B roadster has the same tach problem as yours..Tap it
and it reads..no idea why it does it..been doing it for years..Gas gages are
suspect as well..but the gas smell may warrent more immediate
investigation..Is your filler tube(the rubber tube in the trunk) detererated
at all? Are the clamps thet hold it to the filler tubes tight?Is there any
evidence of fuel leaking around the carb..fuel line area??Is your Vapour
cannister full of fuel?  Just thinking out loud..
