Denise,

Living in Southern California (and Bakersfield [some call us So Cals, some
call us central Californians!]), my answer for the hot idling in traffic was
not only a 160° thermostat, but also a large fan mounted with "radiator
nails" to the back of my radiator in my 1977 MGB. I have a switch in the
dash wired to it. Whenever the 'B gets hot, just a flick of the switch, a
whhooooosh under the hood, and the temp starts falling-too bad that doesn't
happen inside the cockpit as well! If it does get really bad, I put the top
down (if it isn't already!) and turn the heater on...that little bit will
cool the engine down 10-15°!

Good luck!
