Mike,

I'm not as familiar with 1500 Midgets (my partner, Steve, usually takes care
of them and the 1500 Spitfires, as he's the Z-S expert). However, if the
engine has a Gulp valve (and I'm at home now where I do not have a reference
book to check), I'd say that's still a possible culprit.

Since you replaced each of the electrical components and the problem didn't
go away, I'd have to start looking for a non-electrical problem.
Mal-adjusted valves or vacuum leaks would be my first thought. Have you - as
Larry Hoy suggested, done a compression check?
