Tyson.........

I see you've been getting a number of replies to your request for
assistance - as usual, some making more sense than others!

I used HIF4s on my 77B, other people have used HS4s. Both work, but in both
cases you need to make sure you are using the correct needle. For the HIF,
even the richer of the two originally offered for MGBs (the ABD) isn't
really rich enough, I'm finding. For the early HS4 (fixed needle) you'll
need the needle No. 5 or possibly the No. 6 if you install a really
free-flow exhaust system. If you use later HS4s with the flexibly-mounted
needle, the AAL needle may be adequate, maybe you'll need to go richer.

In order to fit air cleaners that don't hit the brake booster, you'll have
to use a thinner spacer block, Moss No. 372-325. The preferred air cleaners
are Moss Ram-Flo, available either round or oval. I prefer the look of the
oval ones. They are Moss No. 223-220, while the round ones are 223-230.

However, the problem with using a thinner spacer block is that now part of
the carburetor linkage will hit the heat shield. On the HIFs, you can grind
away the offending piece of the linkage; on the HS4s, it's necessary to cut
slots in the heat shield. This will become self-evident when you trial fit
all the parts.

As to intake manifold, the best is an early MGB manifold that has a minimum
of plugs and fittings on it. The front side cover vent can be connected to
the front air cleaner using a piece of rubber hose and the plastic fitting
supplied with the air cleaner. If you use HIFs or late HS4s, there are two
vent ports on the carbs to which the engine side cover vent was connected.
Either cap these off or connect them to each other with a piece of hose, if
you connect the side cover to the front air cleaner.

Beyond that, it's all really straightforward. In my opinion, the end result
will be more efficient and more fun to drive than a Weber-equipped B.
