My question is, will I gain any performance by switching to
some sort of higher flow air filter such as a K&N?
If there is a performance increase is it worth the high
prices they ask for the after market air cleaners?

I put a K&N in my Mitsubishi and noticed a definite increase in power. The
old paper filter wasn't crudded up or anything, but the power went up. The
gas consumption also went up. You can't get more power without using more
gas, so be ready for that.

The K&N filter is guaranteed for 1 million miles, and you just clean and
re-oil it once a year. It actually works out to be a decent value.

Just my 2 cents, YMMV.
