Andrew,
Actually Japan just makes it more expensive to run a older car. It does not
matter the amount of mileage just the year. After 10 years the must go in
for yearly inspection. these are about $1,300 a pop. A car 0-9 only has to
go in every 3 years. It is pretty weird for my 70 B (imported via the Air
Force)was considered a "NEW" car in 1988 so it passed as a new car and only
needed a 3 year inspection. My 78 Midget there was on the yearly basis. In a
nut shell if u ever plan on living there prepare for the costs (like $4 per
liter). BTW I had some great driving over there and I cannot wait to go
back.

Because they can have one. Someone might ask why you should be allowed
to drive a '77 car with weak emissions controls... IIRC Japan has some
pretty strict engine restrictions... Something like no engine older
than 2 years or with more than 100k miles is legal. How many engines
would you have gone through by now? My car would be on #14 or 15. My
point is I would rather have her be left alone for driving her car and
me be left alone driving mine.

I agree with the lister who suggested taking down the plate number.
Doesn't much matter what she was driving, she could have hit you! :)
