No offense, but New York prices for anything, especially real estate, can 
hardly be described as "typical."  However, my only touchstone in this 
discussion is the 3-bedroom GI Bill house my dad bought in Rockville, MD, a 
new suburb of DC, for $14K in 1953.  Oh, yeah.  Interest rate was around 2.7%.
