All:

As with many companies, the new motto is profitability. I
worked for Sears in the early 70's and we replaced tools
that were obviously abused including screwdrivers whose ends
were broken off in a vice. I know that during my employment
there many tools were beefed up. This was especially
noticable with the swivel ends on the breaker bars.

Last year Sears replaced a scratch awl for me which I had
ground down over the years trying to keep it sharp. It was
about an inch and half shorter and was replaced with no
hassle. I think the store's management or the department
head's decisions have alot to do with how you get
replacements.
