Impeccable logic.

Yes.  Most of the offset is towards the side, but it may be set just 
slightly forward as well.  If it is the offset hanging adapter it could be 
set straight off to the side with the early (shorter) starter motor.

Most likely correct, so just treat it like it was all original 1967 issue 
parts, and drive it and enjoy it.  You would only be concerned about the 
parts in the block assembly if something inside had to be replaced.
