I just did this on Thanksgiving weekend. I also posted the experience
around then so it is in the archive. First off UHaul is the only company
that will let you rent the trailer without renting the truck. You have to
give truck info, and they verify it when you pick up the trailer. I towed
my '67 BGT eighty miles from Long Island to upper Westchester County (in
NY). Worked like a charm. The only problem we had was that the wheelbase of
the BGTwas kinda narrow for the distance between the ramps and platform. I
really couldn't see, but my brother and friend were directlng me to ease it
on. When I got out (BTW the the fender guard releases and drops down so you
can open the driver door -smart), it did look kinda close. The clearances
were fine getting the car on and off. There are nylon harnesses to wrap
around the wheels and rachet tight. In the back are two chains to wrap
around something sturdy (there is nothing sturdy on my car), I chose the
rear axle. The trailer has hookups for lights, you just need to match them
up (the service center had adapters for sale). You also need a 2" ball
(they were selling those too). What is really cool is the trailer has
hydraulic, not electronic, braking. It senses the load and brakes harder.
My towing friend was very impressed. Of course the towing car must have a
class three (3) hitch. The Caravan (like mine -class two (2) hitch only)
ain't gonna cut it and they won't allow it. Remember the trailer is around
2000 lbs. So is your MG, approximately. most passenger vehicles, like
Caravans, can tow 2500 lbs. MAX(BTW the guy I spoke to at U-Haul said son't
even push it, Iv'e seen Caravans with 2500# in tow -not pretty, nor a good
idea). Thats the car and that is it. An auto dolly will work, but you only
can lift the front wheels (another good idea, I don't think you want to
lift your MG by the rears and drag it that way), so you need to pop the
drive train loose. I didn't want to add any more pain to the car. The only
other trouble I had was actually finding a trailer. Around that time, they
are even more scarce now, everyone is taking whatever down to the south and
dragging their car behind it. UHaul searched and searched and I found out a
day and a half before that they actually had a trailer available. You on
the other hand being the endpoint of everyone's travels should have them
dripping off of trees.
