I can't say that I have never been guilty of nursing a coke between my
legs while driving (keeps you cool on a hot day) but I have never really
felt 'safe' doing this.

Firstly, in a crisis situation you are likely to hesitate for a split
second before leaping onto brake and clutch and/or reaching for the gear
stick or whatever because you KNOW that you are going to end up with a
sticky crotch. I was sideswiped by a person who got out of their car
covered in coke. A witness said they had the cup in their hand at the
time - so I guess it would have been impossible to take proper evasive
action with only one hand on the wheel.

Secondly, no matter where you hold you drink (cupholder or crotch) it is
very difficult to keep your eyes on the road at all times while
drinking, especially when you are getting to the bottom of the container.

If you absolutely can't stop to have a drink and it is vital (or very
desirable) to have a drink, maybe you can look at fixing a drink
container onto your rollbar or behind your seat with a flexible tube you
can stick in your mouth when required (yes, it is easier if you are
wearing a helmet to drink like the raceboys do, but the 'straw' could be
placed somewhere convenient).

This way you can drink while looking forward and without a can/cup
infront of your face and with both hands on the wheel.
