Bill,

It is very easy to avoid being taken.  Just get his banker's cheque and go 
winging down to your trusted bank and tell them the tale including your 
fears of a scam.  Get them to give you a notice to the effect that the 
cheque has CLEARED !!!!!!  -  when and if it clears.   Funnily enough, just 
a half an hour ago I had a phone call from someone with a thick African 
accent asking me to settle my VISA account.  As I do not use VISA I was 
immediately suspicious, more so when he asked to give him my VISA number so 
he could check my claim that I had no bill to pay!  I used a trace and got 
his telephone number and reported it to the VISA people.  It really is fun 
these days - My neighbour fell for that email that claims to be a Microsoft 
update but is really a virus email - took 4 days to fix her PC !!!!
