I have ATT Wireless GSM service; no coverage problems in the NYC to
Philadelphia metro area.  As others have suggested, save your money on
tri/quad band phones.  The ATT charges for GSM service in Europe are
ridiculously expensive.     
 
I commute to London about once a month; it's *far* cheaper to buy a
phone there and use a local carrier: Virgin, Orange, O2...
