Punch 4 holes in the leather to match the trim ring. Use the 4 screws to
hold the chrome ring, the rubber, and the leather together while you insert
the screws and tighten everything down.

I know what you mean, but won't the chrome ring clamp both in place even
though they aren't stapled together? But if you still have the old unit I'd
try removing and reusing the old staples using nothing more than a pair of
long-nose pliers.
