What do you mean by overheating?  You can only call it that if it is losing
coolant or steaming, a simple rise in temp gauge is not necessarily
overheating, and the gauge, sender or stabiliser could be faulty.  How far
up the gauge does it go?  Under what conditions?  I wouldn't recommend
driving round with the radiator cap off but normal gentle driving with the
cap on until it shows the high reading, then still idling carefully and
slowly slacken the cap with a thick cloth protecting your arm.  If you get
clouds of steam and the sound of boiling as you slacken the cap then it
really *is* overheating, tighten the cap again immediately.  Under normal
running temps you should get a slight hiss as you slacken the cap and that
is all, maybe a little overflow.  Then put a thermometer in the header.  A
large overflow without any gurgling indicates you have trapped air in the
system.
