A week later, the nightmare may be over. Yes, thanks very much to the list,
I believe I have acquired the correct accelerator cable for my son's S10
pickup. I'll know for sure when he installs it later today.

An interesting story too. Anyway, after searching all the local auto
stores, I called the dealer and gave him my VIN number. He then proclaimed
the car a 1992 and ordered in the "only" cable for the 1992. But my son
disagreed and showed me the Long Motor (aka Victoria British) catalog that
showed the VIN number was in fact for a 1991. Plus his tag said the car was
built August 1990. So I took a closer look at the catalog that only had a
picture of the wrong cable from 1991 and upon close inspection, it showed
at least four different cables but none pictured for the 91-93 S10 (so much
for everyone saying there was only "one" cable). For the 4.3L engine there
were three cables listed, two for Pontiac, MI built S10s like my son's. All
I had to do was have him check his glove box to see if a three letter code
(CTF) was stamped in there and it was. So now we had a likely match with
VB referencing that specific production code.

But the dealer already had the "92" cable coming in and once he received it
yesterday, I had him describe it to insure the ends on it were correct.
Then I made the ten mile drive across city. Top down in the B, appropriate
to the salesman swarming dealership. When I got there, I compared old cable
to new and the new cable was at least three inches too long. So then I had
to argue with the parts guy and tell him that contrary to what all these
parts guys were saying, there was in fact more than one cable for the 91and
92 S10 and I showed him the page I copied from the VB S10 catalog and gave
him my VIN number again. So he plugged the VIN in and out popped another
cable part number for "special interim build" CTF. They had to order the
cable from Denver and it came in today - looks like the right one.

So the correct answers to my query were to give the dealer the VIN number
(except I had to about force it on him twice) and to check the Long Motor
catalog. And although I still will not order from Victoria British/Long
Motor unless I absolutely have to, I can now say that their catalog still
has some usefull purposes.

And on a related note - two trips to the dealer, both with the top down on
my 72B, appropriate English music blaring (today's selection was Fleetwood
Mac's "Then Play On" from back when the great blues guitarist Peter Green
was with the band) and I didn't get harassed by the omnipresent salesmen,
even when I parked next to one of them fancy overpriced new Corvettes.
