>From observation of other cars overflow can occur in hot conditions as the
fluid expands. BL at one time used to put a sponge collar around the filler
neck, and I have found it necessary on my MGBs.  It isn't critical, as long
as the fluid level is above the top of the master cylinder as an absolute
minimum the rest is 'just' reserve.  If 1/2" below stops the overflow then
that is what I'd use, personally.
