In my Miata with 1.6 litres- when the A/C kicks in, it's as though
someone disconnected one of the sparkplug wires!  However, on a hot day
in traffic, having A/C makes driving a heck of a lot more pleasant. 
Also, although going up hills may be a stuggle for the little 1.6 engine
with A/C, it manages it without a climb in engine temperature.

My VW Golf does not get effected much  by running the A/C.  There is 
absolutely no need to switch off to go up even a real steep hill
