Agree with rare being valuable.

Last weekend I sold one of my Puch mopeds =E2=80=93 an automatic fully orig=
inal 1986 Maxi type, which specially was made for the Dutch market to be dr=
iven up to 16 M/h without a crash helmet. I bought the bike with original f=
irst tires and almost pristine condition @ 1530 KM (almost 1000 miles on th=
e odometer (some scratches on the paint only) for =E2=82=AC 200,00 in 2010.=


Last weekend I sold it for =E2=82=AC 750,00 to a guy who already owned exac=
tly two of those. It then had 3300 KM on the odometer since new.

So being rare =E2=80=93 the guy told me he never saw such an original bike =
in this top condition =E2=80=93 gives value!

   Story of my life! I have two cars that are relatively 'rare', at least i=
n this country, and 'valuable' they are not. The first is a Maserati Biturb=
o E. Its one of only 250 cars with the ' E ' designation and liquid-air aft=
er-coolers (which are often called intercoolers). On a good day the car mig=
ht bring $6000. The second is a Lancia Zagato or a Beta Spyder in Europe. T=
hat car is worth about $25,000 because it is in showroom-like condition and=
 originally delivered to Arizona, USA - so it hasn't collapsed into a pile =
of rust!

   Why, you (didn't) ask, would I own cars like that? Because they're quirk=
y and fun. So further to the point; Valuable by its very nature is a subjec=
tive term. Its dynamic, and I love dynamic systems. To me, these cars' valu=
e is the pleasure they give to me. On the other hand, I just sold an early =
'flying mirror' Testarossa that I restored from cardboard boxes! Despite it=
 rarity, its only 'value' to me was the size of the buyer's check. The car =
was just no fun to own and drive. Granted, some of that blaz=C3=A9 attitude=
 toward it, was because I burned out while restoring it.
