Or, as a friend of mine found out, the dog will get a running start at the 
fence and let out a yelp on the way out. Once the neighborhood has been 
sufficiently checked out, the dog would wait patiently outside the 'shock' 
range waiting for my friend to turn the system off! So, YMMV.
