I used a solid core door.  I purchased a damaged one at the local Home
Defect for cheap.  I then covered the top with a piece of Formica.  I used
the water based contact cement.  That made it easy to get it off when it
needed to be replace.  I found a damaged 4x8 sheet of Formica and got it for
like 5 bucks.  The  Formica cleans up real nice.  Welding splatter makes a
bit of a mess but who cares.
