Radiant is a great way to heat and I think once you have it, you will love
it. When I remodeled my kitchen I poured a slab and put radiant tubing
down. That mass of concrete takes time to heat up, that is why you want to
just maintain a steady temperature. The stuff I put down before we poured
the floor looked like foil faced bubble wrap. I don't remember the R value
of it but really the higher the R value the better as you want to keep all
the heat in the slab. I also put 1-1/2" or 2" rigid foam board around the
perimeter for the same reason. You don't want the heat migrating out
through the footing. In my kitchen I put down ceramic tile which is nice
and warm to bare feet on a cold winter morning. Out of the whole remodel
job, the warm floor is what my wife loves the most. Once you start reading
up on it, you will see that you can even run the radiant tubing in the
walls or ceiling.
