Karl,
While working in a dealership, I would set the odometer of a replacement
speedometer to the actual mileage of the car. It is illegal (here in Iowa) to
reset the odometer to mileage different from actual, unless this is noted on
the title, and identified by a prominent sticker attached to the drivers door
post. This is done to protect the consumer from unscrupulous dealers who
might roll back a speedometer for bigger profits. Some speedometers also
included a ink pad that would turn the numbers blue as they rolled by, easily
identifying a vehicle that had turned over 100k or has had the odometer rolled
back. I don't know if Triumph (Lucas, Smiths) did this, but I wouldn't do
this unless you really want trouble. It's not an easy job (you must
disassemble the speedometer) and should you sell the car at some future time,
it could come back to haunt you!
