I have a 78 also and when I bought it 10 years ago it had a webber dvg on it.
I could never get the water choke to work correctly. I had to adjust it in
the spring and again in the winter. I didn't like it much so I checked with
the PO and he gave me a Stromberg that he thought came from a 77-79 Spitfire.
Again no luck, there are too many emmision controls on this carb that can go
wrong and I could not get it set up corectly on my car.
So one day I was talking to the PO's son and he had a Stromberg from a 72-74
Spitfire that he would sell me for $25 including the correct manifold. After
rebuilding it and experimenting with where all of the emmission hoses ran to
(most of them were lost when the car was converted to the webber) I have
gotten this carb set up so that it purrs. This year it passed the emmission
test in Missouri and it is rumming like a top.
Also, I do have a manual choke on the Stromberg - origional type - and after
my experences with the water choke on the webber I would never put anything
else on one of these cars.
So my 2 cent suggestion is to ask around for a Stromberg from an eariler
(72-74) Spitfire and rebuild that - it could save you a bunch of money.
