This came up a couple months back.  ISTR that we concluded that
the "brace" is a safety feature added to the later North American
1500s only.  In the event of a front end accident, the brace is
supposed to catch on the hook on the firewall, preventing the
bonnet from being driven back into the passenger compartment.
