On some later models the braces near the battery or shelf are there only
on Federal cars as a safety measure.  They prevent the hood from popping
up and going through the windshield in case of a front end collision by
using these braces to 'hook' into the shelf area.  They are on later model
cars but not on Mk III's and earlier for example.  They may only be on
1500's, but I'm not sure on that.
