Jeff and Phillip, that would definetly be an electric tach. These tend to
jump some at low RPMs, if it just happened once than i would probably ignore
it. Quite possibly it is just a loose connection or bad ground. I don't
remember exactly which one but the wire that controls this is wired into the
electronic ignition. As for the electronic ignition, I believe in that year
the factory ignition module was mounted on the side of the distibutor.
Might still be there, looks like a gray box that hugs the distributor. This
was a bad design as the engine heat had a tendency to burn them out. The
Allison unit (now owned by Crane) is a good tested unit. I don't remember
the wiring off hand, it is fairly simple. If you check the archives I know
it has been discussed before.

Hey Phillip!

Congratulations! Regarding the tach, sounds as thought the cable was
binding in the sheath the second time you started it up, or perhaps wasn't
seated fully in either the tachometer itself or the tach drive on the
distributor.

Or do you have an electronic tach. If so, nevermind!! :-0

If your tach is mechanical, pull out the cable and treat liberally with
graphite, then replace. If the cable is at all frayed or damaged in anyway,
get a new one. But something tells me you have an electronic tach, in which
case I have no idea! Congrats on the website, too!

Best wishes,

Jeff in San Diego
