Lots of interesting speculation so far but:

The mystery component is a "lamp test" relay. It momentarily
illuminates the brake warning lamp and EGR service lamp when
you crank the starter. It is wired as follows:

The green/white wire (terminal C1) goes to EGR light (indirectly)
& service interval switch.

Terminal C2 & W2 are connected together and to chassis ground.
A black/blue wire connects from W2 to the Left hand seat (not
seat belt) switch.

Terminal W1 has two white/orange wires. One comes from the
starter solenoid (+12V signal in) the other goes on to the
seatbelt timer/buzzer/annoyance device.

Terminal C4 has a black/purple wire which goes to the brake
warning light.

This wiring scheme is unique to 1976 model US spec. cars.
'76 model cars have J type Overdrive with no OD relay.

Haynes schematics can be useful, but beware, they contain
errors.

Hope this helps.
