I know cross-drilling a crank to improve oil flow to the bearings is a 
common racing modification for V8 engines although I haven't seen it 
recommended anywhere for Spitfires. You'd generally run quite loose 
bearing clearances and a high-volume oil pump with it. It effectively 
gives you two oil feeds to each bearing instead of one.
