In case anyone is interested, just thought I'd post an
update on me trying to get this free Midget running.

Spent the day yesterday outside in the 96+ degree heat with
a steamer and steamed the gas tank out. Talk about some
nasty stuff! That mess coming out of the tank was awful to
behold, however, when I was done, the inside of the tank was
nice and shiney. We had to soak some WD-40 down into the
pipe in the tank that feeds fuel to the car, and then blew
it out with 190 pounds of air. It finally cleared. Soaked
the float in WD-40 as well and it loosened up.

Today, I mounted the tank and dumped in about 3-4 gallons of
gas and some STP carb cleaner. The fuel gauge worked for
about 10 minutes. Changed the line running from the pump to
the carb and inserted a filter. Primed the carb and got it
started. It ran a little better but still seemed to idle
rough. So I adjusted the timing and took care of that. Now
the car will actually start without priming the carb! It's
amazing. And it doesn't run too bad either, although it
still stalls after a while.

I drove it up the street and back, a wee bit nervous to go
very far in it. Especially since the windshield is just
sitting on it. :-) It seems to be spurting out oil, so I
need to look at that.

Speaking of oil, what kind does the 1500 need? All I had
around was 10W-30, but that may be way too thin. The plugs
seemed to be a little oily last time I checked. It's still
putting out quite a bit of white smoke, too. It's thick and
billowy and stinks. After I adjusted the timing, it wasn't
smoking as badly. Could just be all the old crap burning
away?

Thanks for listening!

1500 Midget running just a teeny bit better,
hoping an oil ring isn't broken...
