I'm no stranger to working on gauges myself. I used to own a 63 Volvo p1800
which IMHO has one of the most beautiful and complete sets of Smiths gauges in
any car. I had gone through each gauge one by one, cleaned each, fix the oil
temp and water temp and recalibrated them, heck, I even had the smiths electric
clock working and keeping time (I've never seen another one working in a
p1800),
in any case, it's not really 'rocket science, it just takes a lot of patience,
and a good set of jewelers screw drivers.
BTW - for those of you not familiar with the P1800, it was the original car
from
'The Saint' series with Roger Moore. The body was made by 'pressed steel of
Scotland' and mine was assembled in the 'Jensen coach works factory' in
England,
so I think it's not too sacrilegious that I mention this 'Volvo' here ;-)
