The potential reasons are 
1) the low ratio.  If you roll backwards really fast and pop the clutch
there will be a high load on the gears.
2) on some transmissions, reverse is weak.  It is designed for backing
up which usually is a low-load operation.

On a 5-speed X1/9, bump-starting in reverse is almost garanteed to get
very costly.  BTDT.
