Hi Daniel,

You can narrow down a whole bunch, which smooth case you have. First
off, if you have 8 smoothcase gearboxes, likely most of them are no good
because of a worn out first gear and matching laygear. This you can't
tell very well without disassembly of the gearbox.

Take off the side cover and look at the space between 2nd and 3rd gear on
the output shaft. Easy to identify those as they are gears with bevel
cut gears with only about 1/8 inch between them. The Sprite mk I and
Morris Minor box has a bronze thrust washer and the Sprite mk II has a
steel thrust washer between these gears. clean off the washers with
solvent and a cotton swab and scrape it to see what the washer is made
of. Bronze or steel. That simple.

Where would you be coming from for gearbox 101?!?!

Good luck,

Paul
