Not So Far Off

At a press conference today, President Clinton announced he would be
seeking the help of Congress to close what he called the "Car show
Loophole." The president cited the 40,000 deaths annually related to
automobiles. He stated many of these deadly vehicles are being bought and
sold at car shows around the country without restriction. "Many of the
people looking at and buying these vehicles are often underage and
unlicensed." President Clinton stated something needs to be done to
regulate this almost untouchable industry. He stated that automobile
manufacturers should be held accountable for the death and damage their
products cause. "These companies knowingly manufacture and distribute these
vehicles with full knowledge they can be bought and used by unlicensed
individuals. He also added, "These vehicles are built to exceed the speed
limits, vehicles with motors exceeding 200 cu inches serve no legitamate
driving purposes." "You don't need a 350 to go to the grocery store."
  .
President Clinton plans to ask Congress to impose a mandatory 3 day
waiting period on all automobile purchases. Also a national license instant
check to be used on all private party vehicle sales. The president also
wants to create a law holding dealerships responsible for any criminal act
committed by a vehicle which they sold. Lastly, the president called on
Congress to enact a Vehicle Safety Sterring Wheel Lock Act requiring all
vehicles to have a steering wheel lock in place when not in use. This would
also create penalties for the owner of a vehicle which was used to commit a
crime even if stolen.
  .
Automobile Control Incorporated, a for profit organization which seeks to
ban all automobiles and require everyone to ride bicycles, stated funding
should be set aside for further research into SmartCars. These vehicles
would render itself inoperative if someone other than the registered owner
attempted to use it.
